About Lacewing

Drawing inspiration from this beneficial insect, I design functional and beautiful outdoor spaces that encourage you to linger.

Hello and welcome to Lacewing Garden Design. I am founder and designer Sophie Klein.

At Lacewing Garden Design, I draw inspiration from a very special insect – the Green Lacewing. This beneficial and very beautiful insect is well-known for its ability to control pests such as aphids and mites, and plays an important role as a pollinator. Its presence in your garden is an indicator of a balanced and thriving ecosystem.

Emulating the Lacewing, I believe good design works in harmony with nature. I work with you to create a green space that is both functional and beautiful, and most importantly – suits your specific site, needs, budget and lifestyle. I take the time to engage in deep listening, observation and interaction to ensure the project is a success.

Whether it’s creating a new garden from scratch, renovating or reinvigorating your space, I will come up with creative solutions to ensure you can enjoy your garden the fullest. Every person, couple or family is different. I tailor designs to ensure that everyone can experience the benefit of spending more time outdoors, in a space that encourages you to linger.

Some landscape firms opt for a ‘Backyard Blitz’ approach. These gardens do look impactful upon installation, but often fail to thrive due to conditions, plant positioning, lack of maintenance and other common pitfalls. I avoid this all-too common scenario in a number of ways. Firstly, I engage in iterative design, which means designing in a step-by-step approach, and honing our plans as we go along. Secondly, I undertake an in-depth site analysis to ensure each plant is selected and positioned to thrive. Thirdly, I empower you, the home gardener, to take a hands-on approach– no matter your level of skill, confidence or time available.

I have a special passion for encouraging everyday gardeners, including novice-gardeners, to grow more edibles. With clever design and horticultural expertise, I can help you to grow more of your own food – whether that be starting out with a few potted herbs on your patio, to growing dwarf fruit trees and thriving annual veggie patches.
